A decalogue for caring for the mental health of adolescents. Montserrat Dolz, psychiatrist
What are the first signs that indicate a mental health problem in childhood or adolescence? Do we know how to differentiate between anxiety, fear and depression, when symptoms vary in children, adolescents and adults? Montserrat Dolz is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and head of the Mental Health Department at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, where she has worked in the clinical and research area, later specialising in early care and prevention.
She says that early observation of psychological distress in young people could improve their health and quality of life in the future. “According to the World Health Organisation, 10 to 20 per cent of adolescents have or will have a mental health problem. Many mental disorders start before the age of 18, in childhood and adolescence. It is important to be vigilant when we observe noticeable and persistent changes in children’s behaviour,” says the psychiatrist.
